The Bentley Continental Flying Spur was introduced in 2005. This full-time all-wheel drive, six-speed transmission (with paddle shift allowing manual shift control) car is powered by a 6-litre twin turbocharged W12 engine developing 552 bhp, propelling the car to 190 mph with 0-60 acceleration in 4.6 seconds.
Aesthetic heights were reached in 2012, with the introduction of the Continental Flying Spur Mulliner Series 51, the final model of the first generation of the Continental Flying Spur. The Series design concept was inspired by the spirit of the inaugural Bentley styling department established by John Blatchley, who shaped the iconic 1950s Bentley Continentals. 14 design options were offered but the design team would create any bespoke interior. The Bentley design team operated on a ‘rule of three’ principle to create complex but harmonizing color schemes in three contrasting colors; exotic woods or aluminum panels could be chosen for the dash panel and wood accents.
The 30 GB touchscreen infotainment system is complemented by the driver information panel (DIP) located in the main instrumental panel. The wide-screen DIP employs TFT technology and enhanced graphics to provide the driver with easily accessible information concerning a wide range of systems including door locking, mirror functions, headlamp ‘coming home’ controls, phone pairing and Bluetooth media connectivity.
Bentley also created unique Series 51 graphite-finished nine-spoke, 19 inch sports alloy wheels, with twin Series 51 wing badges behind the front wheel arches, and Series 51 sill plates.
Our Mulliner Series 51 is finished in Beluga and features an interior trimmed in Beluga primary and secondary hides with seat and door inserts in saddle with contrasting seat and emblem stitching in linen. The wood is dark stained Burr Walnut. Other options include deep pile overmats front and rear, hide-trimmed sports gear lever, veneered key storage box, and veneered picnic tables, and a rear view camera in addition to the standard utrasound park distance control front and rear.
The list of standard features for the Continental Flying Spur is long and impressive. The factory build sheet will be provided on request.
Our S 51 was purchased new at Bentley Dallas and has covered just over 30,000 miles. Exterior and interior are near flawless. It has been fully serviced by Palma Automotive.
With its nearly silent cabin, adjustable suspension and the turbine-like W12 engine, this car is capable of delivering the sensation of low-level flight rather than simply cruising down the highway; it negotiates back-road curves like a much smaller car. Perhaps the Edmunds review at the time put it best:
“If you’re looking for the land-bound equivalent of a Gulfstream business jet, you can stop at the 2012 Bentley Continental Flying Spur. In addition to the ability to accelerate like an exotic sports car and cruise effortlessly at autobahn-level speeds, the Flying Spur also offers four doors and a welcoming cabin to comfortably transport its fortunate occupants”.
