If any model is truly responsible for the rebirth of Bentley, it was the Turbo R. At its inception, no European manufacturer had yet placed a turbocharged automobile for sale. Broadspeed, an independent tuner in England, conceived the Turbo R. This was not done ‘in house’. In fact, David Plastow, Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce, LTD, was looking to develop a car which would distinguish Bentley from Rolls-Royce, a distinction that was sorely lacking by the late 1970’s. Plastow allowed this despite the personal wishes of RR Technical Director John Hollings. Interestingly, Broadspeed placed a single turbo on an old Silver Shadow, and was much amazed at the result.
The car was first badged as the Mulsanne Turbo, introduced to great acclaim at the Geneva Auto Show in 1982. In all, 500 of the original Turbos were made. In 1985, the MK 2 or Turbo R was introduced- ‘R’ referring to ‘Roadholding’- including a stiffer front anti-roll bar, a 60% stiffer rear bar with stiffened dampers, and a 50% stiffer bar in the rack-and-pinion steering.
The Turbo R was subjected to constant development. By 1987 this included Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection, digital ignition and twin distributors and coils which boosed peak output to 330 bhp with as top speed of 143 mph. In 1986 Derek Rowland, a company test driver, completed 140.96 miles to set a new national one-hour speed record- breaking the record set previously by a Lamborghini Countach.
By 1992, the Turbo R was further improved by the adoption of the four-speed GM 4L80E automatic transmisson.
